Upward Spiral Studio, established in 2009, is committed to building
a stronger, healthier, and happier community through movement, exercise, and strength.
We specialize in Pilates and the GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® Methods.
The Pilates and Gyrotonic methods can be adjusted to match any fitness level, those recovering from injury or living with a disability to elite athletes. The benefits of both methods are both preventive and therapeutic. Each discipline can provide gentle strength training for rehabilitation or a strenuous workout vigorous enough to challenge skilled athletes. If your physical therapy is coming to an end, the Pilates or Gyrotonic methods may be your answer to maintaining consistency, getting encouraging support, and continuing to build strength and condition your body to stay injury-free.

The PILATES METHOD (mat work, and specialized equipment): Pilates is a full-body workout that improves strength, flexibility, and endurance with a primary emphasis on building strong core muscles. There is mat work and specialized equipment. The workout resistance is created with different strengths of springs, and involves both moving the springs and stabilizing against them.
The GYROTONIC® METHOD (uses specialized equipment): Gyrotonic classes are designed to take the body beyond its current range of motion. People come out of a Gyrotonic class with increased freedom of movement, greater strength and more agility. The movements are circular, small, large; incorporate breath and constant motion, simultaneously strengthening and stretching the body.
The GYROKINESIS® METHOD (seated, standing and floor work): People from all walks of life take Gyrokinesis classes, including accomplished athletes, fitness enthusiasts, senior citizens and people recovering from an injury or dealing with a disability. By the end of a Gyrokinesis session, one’s entire system is awakened and brought into greater balance. Focus on the breath stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, resulting in a sense of calm, well-being and mental clarity.

PRIVATE SESSIONS: One student and one instructor. The session is catered directly to the client’s needs.
DUET SESSIONS: Two students with one instructor. Duets are great for couples, friends, etc. We can also match you with a workout partner! These sessions are catered to the students.
SMALL GROUP EQUIPMENT CLASSES: 3-5 students with one instructor on the equipment. These classes are curated by us to best match the students’ fitness level. This helps promote safety and facilitate continued progression. These classes are generally not posted. If you are interested in a group class on the equipment, EMAIL US! We do prefer clients that are new to the studio start with one to three private sessions so we can best match you in a group class.
GROUP MAT CLASSES ($25, online or hybrid): Pilates Mat, Gyrokinesis, Buff Bones The Buff Bones Class involves Pilates mat work, strength exercises, and balance work. It is designed to be safe for those with osteoporosis. SIGN UP HERE!

Most of our instructors have 10-30 years teaching experience and have a keen interest in anatomical function. We can help you discover and correct muscular imbalances, increase mobility and stability, and achieve your physical aspirations. It is our belief that getting into stronger physical shape benefits a client’s psyche as well, making happier, healthier people through our work together.

Thank you for still giving us the community that we enjoyed at the studio. It’s funny that I do more pilates now than I did before lockdown, due to scheduling. My Pilates practice is the sunniest part of my day. We are nowhere near done with this pandemic but the sun will shine again and we will come full circle.

Our entrance is in the rear of the building, on Bishop Allen Dr. In your GPS, use the address “136 Bishop Allen Dr” to get CLOSE to our door. (However, this is NOT our door.) Find our sandwich board on the sidewalk, near a ramp that leads to our door. Ring the bell to get buzzed in and make your way downstairs.
