Buff-Bones®

A medically endorsed system of movement for bone and joint health.

The bone-strengthening and balance-enhancing workouts can benefit anyone looking to tone up, enhance posture, improve balance, and gain overall strength — and they’re safe for people with osteoporosis and arthritis.

How does Buff Bones work?

The systematic approach uses techniques to strengthen bone tissue, strengthen muscles, improve balance, increase mobility, and remove soft tissue restrictions. It draws upon Pilates, somatics, functional movement, and therapeutic exercise.

Buff Bones exercises help develop a resilient body that can sustain the unexpected challenges of daily life. We want to avoid falling when we slip. This comes from toe, foot, leg, and hip strength. We want to be able to lift our luggage in the overhead compartment.  This is from upper body, shoulder and arm strength (and glutes!) We want to maintain mobility in our bodies, be able to reach, bend, and turn. Back strength play in important role in posture. Impact plays a role in the strengthening of bones as well.

All this leads to molding resilient, functional bodies and empowering clients to have a sense of awareness, strength, and comfort in their bodies.

I have loved your in-studio Pilates and Gyrotonic Method classes for over ten years. You have shaped my body and kept it moving strong and flexible. But now, it’s your Buff Bones classes that are my newest motivators to keep at it! They offer an invigorating exercise class for toning and flexibility. I love that each instructor has their own flair and that they keep an eye on our poses. They have a knack for keeping us engaged and in a good frame of mind to keep going. Your Zoom classes have been an absolute luxury over the past year.

A former Pilates student and now a Gyrotonic devotee, I discovered Buff Bones classes during the early months of the 2020 pandemic. Though I now once again enjoy Gyro in the studio, I have continued to enroll in Buff Bones classes via Zoom at least twice a week. They are the ideal complement to the spirals and fluid choreography that I love in Gyro. They are great for increasing balance and core-leg-glute strength, and I am constantly amazed what a good, warming workout can be achieved through largely isometric work on the mat or standing. Thanks to all the BB instructors for their enjoyable and beneficial classes. I know they have helped me immensely during these unusual times!

My partner andI have been taking Buff Bones for several years and have found it so beneficial. We come with different levels of experience and yet we both find the form offers a great training for strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. In short, Buff Bones can fit any background and need and complements other physical training forms well. The teachers at Upwards Spiral have had a different take on Buff Bones which has made it a fun and evolving experience. Do it!

Upward Spiral Studio’s take on the Buff Bones form of Pilates is nothing short of amazing. I have attended other classes with notable Buff Bones instructors, but none have left me with the feeling that while adhering to the BB specifications, I have had a thorough workout. This class will be team-taught in the new year with trainers that I have worked with for years. I highly recommend that you try an online class with Upward Spiral Studio. Once you have tasted the skill of these trainers, you will search no further.

Buff Bones is a great workout, and Bess is the best! She provided modifications to accommodate an injury I had suffered and then went above and beyond by texting sketches and written descriptions of those modifications.
